THE EXHIBITION

For two weeks in August, artists and researchers worked side by side in Schönbach, around the partial solar eclipse of 12 August. On view at the Kunsthalle Görlitz is what came out of it: virtual environments built from astrophysical data; projections reaching for what cannot be seen; films where chance takes the director's chair; sound works; landscapes caught between open-cast mining and wilderness; and prints lifted directly from the floor of a disused weaving mill. Measurements, instruments and scientific questions become the material of artistic practice. The show runs largely on headphones, with a shared sound loop that makes individual works collectively audible at times.

Friday 18 September · Vernissage

IAN PURNELL and PHILINE RINNERT discuss The Black Hole Image with researchers from the DZA — an attempt to picture an event horizon. YASIN ABDEL-HAMID premieres TSHBE!, his filmic account of eclipse day, tracing the soundwalk from the Schönbach quarry to the summit of the Bieleboh. PHILIP JÜRGENSEN recounts filming the sun, and his involvement in Athos 2643, the science-fiction feature adapted from Nils Westerboer's novel (dir. David Wnendt, in cinemas 2027).
 

Some works take the spotlight, with the artists and/or their scientific collaborators present. Among the guests: PD DR. TORSTEN ENßLIN, DR. MIKE LINDNER and DR. STEFAN OHM (DZA), and PROF. SAMAYA NISSANKE (DESY / DZA), among the leading international researchers in gravitational-wave and multi-messenger astronomy.

 

Saturday 19 September · "Let's Eat the Sun!"

Open 10:00–21:00. Music and bar in the evening.

The exhibition keeps its regular hours while, just around the corner, the DZA opens its doors for its Open Day; on Jakobstraße, which links the Kunsthalle with the DZA, the street festival is under way. The evening brings a relaxed atmosphere with music and a bar.

 

Tuesday 29 September · Futures in Sorbian / Serbske přichody

From 17:00. With KATJA HRJEHORJEC and WANDA BRANKAČKEC (kolektiw WAKUUM).

Free, donations welcome. German, with English and Sorbian as needed. Sorbian — the languages the Germans have forever declared doomed. Several centuries on, we are still here. We turn dystopia into utopia — and we take you with us.

Video & sound installation Artistic research between queer atoms, quantum physics, and speculative fiction — the spaceship HORIZON travels through the terrestrial and cosmic landscapes of the Lausitz in search of the Queer Horizon, the Not-Yet.
 

the black hole image · Philine Rinnert & Ian Purnell 
Multimedia installation An attempt to picture what cannot be seen — an event horizon imaged only around its edge. The hole is made in the room, not in the file. Come round the back and you see the whole apparatus; that is the point. Made with Mike Lindner and Torsten Enßlin at the DZA.

VR Installation · Jiří Vyskočil & Voor Winkler
Interactive VR, sound Step inside a simulated cosmos, built from Torsten Enßlin's astrophysical data — a space you move through rather than look at. Voor Winkler's sound carries you into the data as much as the image does.

Eclipse Footage & Sun Prints · Philip Jürgensen 
Video The eclipse filmed direct, through a special camera and a solar filter built for looking at the sun, then coaxed out of light that ordinarily destroys the frame. What looks simple is the opposite: every second is worked. Printed large, the sun becomes a picture in its own right — drawn from the same eclipse footage, worked frame by frame.
 

Scanner Film · Marina Baibarza
Short film, video, scans A handheld scanner — a device built to copy documents flat — is turned on the landscape, where its errors, tears and smears become the image. Familiar things turn abstract.
 

STRACH · Katja Hrjehorjec
Video & sound installation A video and sound collage on anxiety and paralysis in times of rising fascism.
 

The Quiet Ground · Jozef Eduard Masárik
Short film The rocky landscapes of Greenland as triggers for perceptions that disrupt so-called Western scientific rationalism — the ground paired with the sky.
 

Going back to eyes and ears · Rhona Eve Clews
Sound work A sound collage of conversations recorded with scientists and artists during SEAR, alongside field recordings from Lusatia — on listening, and what different bodies and instruments can perceive, amplify, filter or translate beyond ordinary human senses.
